about

"Boston isn't really known for being a hotbed of minimal Techno, but Smartypants, aka Mike Uzzi of the Unlockedgroove crew, shows that location isn't everything, with a solid, if not groundbreaking 12" of German-leaning sounds. The lead track is a study in Chain Reaction-styled pinging that distinguishes itself with yearning, detuned synthesizers that sweep through the mix. San Francisco's Broker/Dealer rework the song in their own cushioned style, filling up space with ample delay and quietly jarring dissonance. Boston's Localfields strips the same cut down to assembly line clicks and rivets, bathed in the harsh glare of reduced bit-rates. Smartypants's own "Uh, Hypnotize", far more assured than it's title, is the best thing here - a punchy number that recalls early Kompakt's pistoning simplicity, overlaid with Satie-like piano ruminations and pinwheeling little synthesizer details. Beneath every beat is the hint of another, faded and subtler, until the rhythms begin to feel like pages from an onionskin flipbook."

"Uzzi aims to raise the bar for deep, minimal techno"
